Search from the title bar
Use global search when you remember what you are looking for but not where it lives in the app.
Prerequisites
- Big Picture Money is open and your data file is unlocked.
Steps
-
Click the search field in the title bar, or press Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+K (macOS).
-
Confirm the placeholder reads Search transactions, accounts, settings, help….
-
Type a search term — for example
Grocery storeorSimpleFIN. -
Review the dropdown below the field. Results appear in groups (for example Transactions, Settings).
-
Use the ↑ and ↓ arrow keys to highlight a result, or move the mouse over a row.
-
Press Enter to open the highlighted result.
- A Transaction result opens Transactions with that row selected.
- A Settings result opens the matching settings category.
- A Chat result opens Chat with that conversation loaded.
-
To see more matches instead of opening one row, press Enter when no row is highlighted, or click View all results in the dropdown footer.
-
Press Escape to close the dropdown without leaving your current page.
Empty search
If you open search without typing, you see static shortcuts — common pages and actions such as Transactions or Import.
Expected result
- The search field accepts focus from a click or Ctrl+K / Cmd+K.
- While typing, the dropdown shows categorized results with type badges (Transaction, Settings, Page, etc.).
- At most about 10 quick results appear across all groups.
- Enter on a highlighted row opens that destination.
- Enter with no row highlighted, or View all results, opens the Search page at
/search?q=…. - Escape closes the dropdown.
